Monitors

A monitor checks something of yours from outside your network, the way a visitor would, and emails you when it fails and when it recovers.

Monitor types

  • Website: the address responds with a valid status code and, optionally, the page contains a text.
  • TCP port: a service accepts connections on a port (email, database, VPN, an API).
  • Ping: a device or server responds on the network.
  • Certificate expiry: how many days your site's certificate has left. We alert you when the days you choose remain (14 by default) or if it stops being valid. Checked every hour; it doesn't count as downtime.

The Free plan includes websites only. TCP port, ping and certificate expiry are available from the Basic plan: on Free you'll see them marked Basic and up.

Create a monitor

  1. Go to Monitors and choose Add monitor.
  2. Choose the type.
  3. Enter a name (for example "Website" or "Email") and the address: a full URL like https://www.yourcompany.com, or a name like mail.yourcompany.com and its port.
  4. Choose how often to check, according to your plan.
  5. Click Create monitor. It shows as Starting until the first measurement, which arrives within minutes (within the hour for certificates).

The address must be public. Internal network addresses are not accepted.

What we check on a website

  • That the address responds within 30 seconds with a valid status code (200).
  • If you set one, that the page contains the expected text. This also catches a site that responds but shows an error.
  • The cause when it fails: name not found, invalid certificate, timeout, server error or missing text.

Statuses

  • Starting: just created; waiting for the first measurement.
  • Up: the last check succeeded.
  • Unstable: the last check failed, but it isn't an incident yet.
  • Down: it failed twice in a row; an incident is open and we email you.
  • Slow: it responded correctly but took longer than normal (10 seconds for a website, 5 for a port, 1 for a ping). It's recorded but doesn't count as downtime.

Alerts

When a monitor goes down, every active user in your company gets an email. When it's back up and stays up for 10 minutes, they get another one.

Plans

  • Free: 5 monitors (websites only), checked every 5 minutes. Each website monitor can check the status code, a text that must appear and a text that must not appear.
  • Basic: 10 monitors, every minute. Adds TCP port, ping and certificate expiry.
  • Professional: 50 monitors, every 30 seconds, with every monitor type.

To change plans, your company's administrator goes to Plan and payment. Before confirming, you'll see how much is charged and what changes.

  • The change takes effect immediately and is calculated in proportion to the time left in the paid period. The same applies to upgrading, downgrading or switching between monthly and yearly.
  • If you upgrade, today you're charged only the difference for the time left.
  • If you downgrade, what you didn't use of the previous plan stays as a credit and is deducted from your next charges. No money is refunded.
  • If the new plan allows fewer monitors than you have, the newest ones are paused (not deleted) and are reactivated automatically if you upgrade again.
  • If the new plan doesn't include a monitor type you have (for example, a TCP port when moving to Free), that monitor is paused (not deleted) and is reactivated automatically if you move back to a plan that includes it. You'll see which ones are paused before confirming.

If a payment can't be collected, we email your company's administrators and the portal shows a notice until it's resolved. To change your card, go to Plan and payment.
